«The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society» is a delightful and unexpected novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows set during World War II. In post-war London, young writer Juliet is struggling to find inspiration for her next book. She has no desire to write about the horrors of war, and other topics seem either dull or inappropriate. Then, a chance letter from a resident of the island of Guernsey comes to her aid. It turns out that even the simple islanders love to read, and the mysterious Dawsey, who has come across a book once owned by Juliet, asks for a recommendation for a good bookstore. Books are scarce on Guernsey, as the island was occupied by the Germans throughout the war. Thus begins a correspondence, or rather, a love story through letters, between Juliet and the islanders. What started as material for a new book quickly becomes a story of its own, with an entirely unexpected ending. This novel was adapted into a feature film in 2018 by Mike Newell and received acclaim from many film critics.
